WARD CHOIR CHRISTMAS PROGRAM 2010
1. Primary Children Sing: Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus
2. Narration:
Before Christ came to the Earth in Bethlehem, God’s prophets on the American Continent were prophesying of His coming. One prophet, a righteous Lamanite named Samuel, was called by God to prophesy to the Nephites in Zarahemla. He preached for many days and they cast him out of his city. He was going to return to his own land, but the voice of the Lord came to him and told him to go back and prophesy whatever came into his heart. The people would not let him into their city, though, so he went and got upon the wall of the city and cried with a loud voice the things that God put into his heart. He prophesied of many things to them. Among them was the prophecy of the Lord’s birth.
He told them that 5 years would pass and then the Son of God would come to redeem all those who would believe on his name. He also told them that a sign would come at the time of His birth. There would be great lights in heaven, and the night before His birth the whole night would be light as if it was daytime. Also, a new star would arise, unlike any they had ever seen. Samuel told the people that these would be the signs, and that whoever would believe on the Son of God would have everlasting life. (Helaman 14:2-5,8)
In the book of 3rd Nephi, we learn that after the 5 years had passed, many miracles and signs were being witnessed among the Nephites. There were many who believed in Samuel’s words and waited for the sign of Christ’s coming. However, there were also many unbelievers who said the time had already passed and that it was never going to happen, and they mocked the people who believed in Samuel’s words. But behold, the faithful people did watch steadfastly for the signs, so they would know that their faith had not been in vain.
3. MEN SING – O COME EMMANUEL by Andrew Hawryluk
4. NARRATION:
Now it came to pass that there was a day set apart by the unbelievers, that all those who believed in those traditions should be put to death unless the sign should come to pass. Nephi, the grandson of Helaman, saw this wickedness and his heart was exceedingly sorrowful. He cried mightily to his God all day in behalf of his people who were going to be destroyed. The voice of the Lord came unto him, saying: Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all that my prophets have spoken.
Just as the Lord had promised, that night when the sun went down, there was no darkness, and the people were astonished and knew that it was the day that the Lord would be born. The people who believed in Samuel’s words were not put to death. Despite the wickedness of the unbelievers, the faithful followers of God were given hope and peace.
5. CHOIR SINGS – I HEARD THE BELLS ON CHRISTMAS DAY by Amy Dalton
6. NARRATION:
On the other side of the world, Joseph and Mary had traveled to Bethlehem to pay their taxes. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inns.
7. CHOIR SINGS – BORN IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD by Sally DeFord
8. NARRATION:
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by
night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is
Christ the Lord. And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (Luke 2:8-14)
9. QUARTET – "ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH" by Sharon Austad Bagley
10. NARRATION:
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
11. VIOLIN SOLO: AWAY IN A MANGER by Mindy Meyers
12. CHOIR SINGS: SILENT NIGHT by Craig Petrie
13. NARRATION:
NOW … there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is the child that is born, the Messiah of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him. They departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him:
and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:9-12)
14. CHOIR SINGS: WHAT CHILD IS THIS? by Genevieve Thompson
15. NARRATION:
This, this is Christ our King. The Christmas season can often lead us to get so busy and caught up in the traditions around us that sometimes we forget who it is that we are celebrating. This is the Christ, our King! This is the Christ, God’s only begotten son, who lived a perfect life filled with serving others. This is the Christ, our Savior, who suffered in Gethsemane for our sins and was humiliated and hung on the cross to Atone for all mankind. This is the Christ, who rose again after His death. This is the Christ, the light and the life of the world, the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. He lives today and guides and directs our paths if we come unto Him. We are forever indebted to Him. Let us remember Him every day and never forget what He has done for us.
